Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced on Friday that a strategic committee meeting of the Makkah Defence Alliance would take place in Riyadh on October 5th, focusing on addressing Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia. The Strategic Political and Defence Committee (SPDC) comprises three ministers from each country involved: Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. At a briefing about the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Dar mentioned that high-level meetings were held by the foreign ministers and army chiefs due to recent escalations in Houthi attacks.
Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defense Minister Yasar Guler, and their Chief of General Staff General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu will attend alongside officials from Pakistan. The Pakistani delegation includes Dar, the Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Defense Minister Khawaja Asif. This meeting is expected to discuss regional developments and explore potential political engagement with the Houthis as an alternative to military action, according to comments made by Dar about suggestions coming from Iran.
The Makkah Defence Alliance was established under a trilateral agreement aiming to ensure security around Islam’s holy sites and respond to threats in the region. The upcoming SPDC meeting is seen as crucial for coordinating defense strategies amid increasing tensions with Yemen's Houthi rebels who have launched multiple attacks on Saudi Arabia, including targeting its oil facilities.
