Fighting erupted on September 23 in northern Ethiopia as the rebel Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) launched attacks into neighbouring states, raising fears of a return to the devastating 2020-2022 civil war.
What happened
The outlets' own sentences, most widely reported first. Hover one for who reported it.
The TPLF has forged an alliance with six other armed groups around the country in a bid to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Eritrea has severed diplomatic ties with Ethiopia after Addis Ababa closed its embassy in Asmara and expelled 10 Eritrean diplomats.
In addition to once being Tigray’s ruling party, the TPLF was the dominant group in a coalition that ruled Ethiopia between 1991 and 2018.
Eritrea fought alongside the Ethiopian government during the Tigray war, but relations between the neighbours have since deteriorated.

The renewed tensions in Africa's second-most populous country come as the wider Horn of Africa region is already facing multiple conflicts, including a war in neighboring Sudan that has been raging for more than three years.
Tigrayan forces and their allies seized three local airports and launched attacks against federal troops in Afar and Amhara in what they called a defensive war to counter aggression by Abiy's government.
