Chinese researchers have outlined a five-stage plan to develop artificial intelligence systems capable of building better versions of themselves without human intervention, aiming to catch up with US firms that currently lead due to superior access to computing resources. The study, titled “The Last AI Built by Humans: Toward Genuine Recursive Self-Improvement”, was published by researchers from leading universities and tech giants in China. This initiative marks a new phase in the global competition for advanced AI capabilities, focusing on automating the labor-intensive processes of training, evaluating, and fine-tuning AI models.
