The Aporia
The European Parliament, a key institution within the European Union, is set to establish an "antenna" office in Ottawa, Canada's capital city. This move aims to deepen ties between Canada and the EU, which consists of 27 member states. The decision follows remarks by Prime Minister Mark Carney who seeks to form a "unique alliance" with the EU without pursuing membership. Roberta Metsola, president of the European Parliament, stated that this new presence in Ottawa will enhance parliamentary cooperation. Currently, the EU already has an embassy in Ottawa managed by the European Commission, but this upcoming office is separate and aimed specifically at fostering exchanges between Canadian MPs and senators and their counterparts in the European Parliament. This initiative marks the 10th such location for the parliament globally, with previous offices established in cities like New York and Washington. The new office will facilitate better understanding of issues including Arctic affairs, security matters, and transatlantic trade.
