On October 16, 2026, Steven Hamilton, a 71-year-old fisherman from Winter Garden, Florida, was killed by an alligator while posing for a photograph with a large bass near Lake Apopka at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park, located about 15 miles northwest of Orlando. The attack occurred around 5 p.m. when Hamilton heard the gator approaching and attempted to run but slipped and fell; the alligator then latched onto his left leg and dragged him into the lake. Captain Michael Mason of the Winter Garden Police Department confirmed that a nearly 3.7-meter (12-foot) alligator was "dispatched" as a danger to public safety after the incident, while the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission stated they extend their sympathies to Hamilton's family during this difficult time. Witnesses reported seeing multiple large alligators in the area before and after the attack, with some reaching up to 15 feet long.
