Steven Hamilton, a 71-year-old man, was killed by a nearly 12-foot alligator while fishing along the shore of Lake Apopka in Dr. Bradford Memorial Park, Winter Garden, Florida, on October 16, 2026. The attack occurred around 5 p.m. local time, and despite efforts to rescue Hamilton, his body was not recovered until 7 p.m. due to other alligators in the water posing a danger to rescuers. Emergency personnel declared Hamilton dead at the scene. The FWC captured and killed the attacking alligator as a safety measure for public protection. Lake Apopka is known for its large population of American alligators, making such incidents relatively uncommon but not entirely unexpected. This marks the second fatal alligator attack in Florida this year.
