On October 16, 2026, Steven Hamilton, a 71-year-old man from Winter Garden, Florida, was fatally attacked by a nearly 12-foot-long alligator while fishing along the shoreline of Lake Apopka in Dr. Bradford Memorial Park. The attack occurred around 5 p.m., and despite emergency responders rushing to the scene, they were unable to rescue Hamilton due to the presence of other active alligators in the water. His body was recovered two hours later at approximately 7 p.m. The alligator that killed Hamilton was captured and "dispatched" by trappers from the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) as a danger to public safety.
Hamilton's death is the second fatal alligator attack reported in Florida this year, following another incident where a woman died after being attacked by an alligator near her home in June. The FWC notes that Lake Apopka has one of the largest American alligator populations in Central Florida, making such encounters relatively common but still dangerous.
