A team of archaeologists from Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute traveled to Nikumaroro, a remote island in Kiribati, hoping to find wreckage of Amelia Earhart's lost plane. The expedition was based on the "Taraia Object," a mysterious item visible since 1938 in photos of the island’s lagoon. However, after arriving at the site, researchers concluded that the object is likely a collection of large trees washed up along the shore and not wreckage from Earhart's Lockheed Electra 10-E plane. Purdue University stated that by the time they reached the site, most of the debris had fragmented and washed away, leaving only a single Y-shaped segment. This finding marks another setback in efforts to solve the nearly 90-year-old mystery of Earhart’s disappearance during her attempt to fly around the world in 1937.
