A team of researchers from Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute arrived at Nikumaroro Island in Kiribati on October 13, 2026, after a five-day journey across the Pacific Ocean, to investigate a mysterious object possibly linked to Amelia Earhart's lost plane. The Taraia Object, visible in aerial photographs since 1938 and first spotted in satellite images in 2020, could provide evidence supporting the theory that Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan crash-landed on or near Nikumaroro Island during their ill-fated attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937. The team plans to use magnetometers and sonar devices to scan the area before dredging the lagoon for a closer inspection of the object, which could be part of Earhart's Lockheed Electra aircraft.
