A team of researchers from Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute arrived at Nikumaroro Island in the Pacific Ocean on October 13 to investigate a mysterious object potentially linked to Amelia Earhart's lost plane. The object, first spotted in satellite images in 2020 and visible in aerial photos dating back to 1938, could confirm that Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan crash-landed there during their ill-fated attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937. However, severe weather forced them to pause operations on October 16, leaving only two days before they must depart Nikumaroro. Despite challenges like giant coconut crabs and rough seas, researchers hope to collect enough data to identify the object as Earhart's Lockheed Electra 10-E plane.
