A Singapore-flagged container ship, GFS Pride, sank in the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by an unknown projectile on Tuesday. All 21 crew members were safely evacuated with no injuries reported. The incident comes amid a surge in attacks by Iran targeting ships in the strategic waterway. Another vessel, the Cape Dao flagged under Antigua and Barbuda, was also reportedly sinking near the strait after being hit earlier this month on September 23rd. Attacks have increased sharply since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran, leading to a significant drop in oil shipments through the Strait. Iranian officials assert that Tehran will continue fighting until Washington meets its demands, indicating these attacks are part of their strategy to maintain high oil prices and influence the upcoming US midterm elections on November 3rd.
Iran saying it is stepping up strikes in response to the US blockade of its ports and tougher sanctions introduced last month.
