A Comoros-flagged chemical and oil tanker named Yara J caught fire while anchored in Romanian territorial waters on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The crew safely evacuated, but Romanian authorities have yet to determine if the incident was caused by a drone attack. This event is part of a series of five commercial ship attacks off the coasts of NATO members Romania and Bulgaria since early October, resulting in about 23 sailors dead or missing.
Romania's naval authority reported that the Yara J was anchored approximately 8 to 10 nautical miles southeast of the Sulina canal when the fire broke out. The incident has heightened concerns over the increasing threat posed by drone warfare linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which endangers commercial shipping in the Black Sea and disrupts vital agricultural supplies for other continents.
Romanian President Nicusor Dan emphasized that these attacks are consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, endangering not only shipping but also crucial grain exports via the Sulina Canal. Both Romania and Bulgaria plan to collaborate closely on advocating for stronger counter-drone measures within the EU and NATO.
The attacks have highlighted the growing threat that drone warfare linked to the Russia-Ukraine war poses to commercial shipping in the Black Sea.
