Two ships were hit by drones off Bulgaria's Black Sea coast on October 13, with one sinking and prompting an emergency rescue operation. Prime Minister Rumen Radev called the attacks "absolutely unacceptable" and sought NATO and EU assistance. One ship, the Maltese-flagged Chelsea 3, was struck by three drones, damaging its deck and hull; all 15 crew members were rescued, with five receiving medical treatment for minor injuries. The other ship sank near Krapets, and one crew member from it was saved. Radev also summoned the Russian ambassador to discuss the attacks, which he suspects are linked to Russia due to their timing and impact on maritime security in the Black Sea. The strikes follow a similar incident on October 6 that resulted in the sinking of one ship with presumed dead crew members. Rescuers continue searching for missing crew from both incidents as Bulgaria investigates further. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned Russia's actions, stating they demonstrate disregard for civilian lives and maritime security. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is set to discuss the situation with Radev shortly. [Updated on 2026-10-14]: Bulgaria says Russia was likely behind the drone attacks but lacks conclusive evidence. Prime Minister Radev noted that while there's logic pointing towards Russian involvement, proving it remains challenging. Search efforts continue for missing crew members. NATO and EU support is being sought to investigate these incidents further.
