The Aporia
Maroš Šefčovič, the European Union's trade commissioner, is in Beijing for two days of critical talks aimed at addressing the EU’s growing trade deficit with China, which exceeds €1 billion ($1.12 billion) daily. The main focus of these discussions is to curb China’s exports of cheap hybrid electric cars into Europe and find a way to balance the massive trade surplus that currently stands at over €360 billion ($410 billion). Although both sides are hoping for some progress, optimism remains low due to historical difficulties in reaching meaningful agreements. The talks come amid growing concerns across the EU about job losses and industrial sector impacts from Chinese competition.
