The Aporia
On Tuesday in Jerusalem's al-Tur neighborhood, Israeli authorities demolished a five-storey residential building without prior notice or warning. The building housed about 70 people across 10 apartments and was allegedly built without proper permits. Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s National Security Minister, who is known for his far-right stance, drove a bulldozer at the demolition site and declared that he "loves hearing this noise" while the building was being destroyed.
Palestinian officials strongly condemned the move as an act of “forcible transfer,” aiming to impose a new demographic reality in east Jerusalem. The residents were given minimal time to evacuate with only essential items, leaving behind personal belongings amidst rubble. Palestinian Governorate authorities highlighted that densely populated areas like eastern Jerusalem face severe housing crises due to stringent permit requirements from Israeli authorities.
This demolition has displaced dozens of families and further strained the already tense relationship between Israelis and Palestinians over land rights and residential permits in annexed east Jerusalem.
Palestinians searched through the rubble of a demolished residential building in Jerusalem's al-Tur neighbourhood on Tuesday, looking for belongings left behind.
Residents say they had repeatedly applied for permits and were given little time to remove their belongings.
