The Aporia
A 28-year-old lab technician named Darya Shipilova died in Siberia after breaking a test tube containing the plague pathogen at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute. The incident prompted health authorities to quarantine around 200 people who had contact with her, as well as close several hospitals for up to three weeks. Anna Popova, Russia's chief sanitary doctor, rushed to Siberia to oversee the situation, and a mask mandate was implemented in Irkutsk. Despite some local media speculation about a broader outbreak, Russian officials have maintained that the risk remains low, with all contacts testing negative so far. The U.S. State Department is monitoring the situation closely alongside the CDC. Reports suggest Shipilova had symptoms while on a field expedition and was hospitalized on September 29, dying two days later despite treatment. Some health experts warn of potential misinformation due to Russia's lack of transparency, echoing concerns similar to those raised during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan. The World Health Organization is also reportedly involved but has not yet issued an official statement on the incident.
