The Aporia
The European Commission is set to propose a ban restricting children under 15 from accessing social media, video-sharing platforms, AI chatbots, and online games. This proposal, part of the "EU Kids Act," aims to protect children from online dangers while allowing gradual access according to age. Children aged 15 can open their own accounts, those aged 13-14 need parental permission for supervised "mini accounts" with strict time limits, and under-13s are entirely banned. The proposal follows increasing pressure from EU member states like France and Greece and aligns with growing global concerns about the impact of digital platforms on children's well-being.
Under the plans, there would be a gradual approach to children using social media which would include banning under 13s from accessing platforms.
