The Aporia
On September 16, Canada applied to join the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), a rapid response military partnership comprising ten North Atlantic NATO member states, including Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced this move from Ottawa, aiming to diversify Canada's defense ties beyond its traditional reliance on the United States. The application comes after Carney met with British PM Andy Burnham in northern England, where they also discussed potential cooperation through the Global Combat Air Programme, a fighter jet project in which Canada became an observer in July 2026. Joining JEF marks Canada's effort to strengthen military ties with European nations within NATO.
