As of the mid-term elections on November 1, 2026, Democrats made significant gains against Republicans, who were in control of both chambers of Congress since January 2025. In the House of Representatives, Democrats won enough seats to surpass Republicans, holding 218 out of 435 seats compared to Republicans' 214, with one independent and two vacancies. In the Senate, Democrats also increased their presence, reducing the Republican majority from 53 seats to a narrow lead over Democrats' 45, with two independents supporting the Democratic side. These shifts reflect a major political realignment halfway through Donald Trump's second term as president.
