New York City is moving to ban horse-drawn carriages from Central Park, ending a tradition of more than 150 years following long-standing campaigns by animal welfare groups and the fatal accident of a teenage tourist last spring.
What happened
The outlets' own sentences, most widely reported first. Hover one for who reported it.
Animal welfare advocates and critics have campaigned against the industry for decades, contending that horses should not be working among dense traffic, busy park roads, and crowds of spectators.
Politico reported that Mamdani and council Speaker Julie Menin had reached an agreement for the mayor’s administration to back legislation that would make operating horse-drawn carriages in the city illegal starting in June 2028.
On June 17, 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan fell off a runaway carriage and died while on a family trip to the city.
The bill in consideration was originally named Ryder’s Law after a 14-year-old carriage horse who collapsed in 2022 and was later euthanized due to cancer.
