On October 16, 80 masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers harvesting olives in the West Bank village of Abu Falah, injuring at least two people including an American journalist, Heidi Levine. Settlers burned olive trees and threw rocks while armed with gas canisters and clubs; some used slingshots to launch projectiles. Israeli military jeeps arrived but did not stop the violence. Levine was seriously injured and hospitalized with multiple fractures and puncture wounds. She reported that if she had not been wearing protective gear, she would likely have died. The incident highlights a surge in settler attacks on Palestinians; 660 such incidents killed six Palestinians and wounded 140 others in the first half of 2026 according to Israeli security forces.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing a tight race for a new mandate, has tried to shore up his pro-settlement right-wing base and has cast doubt on the circumstances behind the recent settler attacks on Westerners.
