Romanian F-16 fighter jets shot down two drones over Romanian territorial waters on Saturday, according to the country’s defence ministry. Defence Minister Radu Miruta stated that the drones were likely Russian-made Geran-4 models flying at speeds of 450 km/h, which is similar to fighter jets. This incident occurred days after two chemical tankers near Romania's Black Sea coast were hit by drones, highlighting growing security concerns for commercial shipping in NATO’s eastern flank.
The Sulina Canal, where the attacks took place, links the Danube River to the Black Sea, serving as an important export route for Ukraine. Romania shares a 614-km border with Ukraine and has reported numerous Russian drone incursions since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The country is now actively shooting down drones that enter its airspace, emphasizing its commitment to protecting its territorial integrity and maritime security within NATO.
