As of October 18, 2026, a fast-moving wildfire known as the Norte Fire had burned through parts of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano in Orange County, California, damaging or destroying six homes. The fire grew to approximately 570 acres (230 hectares) by October 17, with only 5% containment achieved despite overnight efforts from over 500 firefighters. Two firefighters were injured due to heat exhaustion but no civilian injuries or fatalities have been reported.
The blaze started around noon on October 16 in San Clemente and rapidly spread towards San Juan Capistrano under the influence of strong Santa Ana winds, with gusts up to 70 mph (112 km/h). Local authorities have evacuated over 6,000 homes housing about 16,000 residents. Firefighters are prioritizing containment efforts while ensuring community safety.
Evacuation shelters include Boys and Girls Club in San Juan Capistrano, the San Juan Capistrano Community Center, and the San Clemente Community Center. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA).
