Several hundred young people clashed with police during a protest in Brussels on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The unrest was partly inspired by similar demonstrations in neighboring France, where protests started over education funding and school conditions. In Brussels, protesters gathered in the city center, many wearing masks and chanting anti-fascist slogans while some turned violent, overturning a car. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons to control the rioters. Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin warned that "all necessary means will be used" to restore order, emphasizing the need for stricter measures as the situation escalated beyond peaceful protest.
