Andrej Babis, the Czech Prime Minister, suffered a significant setback on October 14 when opposition parties won most of the votes in Senate elections. ANO, his party, failed to secure any of the seats it contested, marking one of its first major electoral tests since taking power last year. The pro-European Mayors and Independents party emerged as the strongest performer, winning 10 out of the 14 seats they competed for, including two outright victories in the first round. Despite this defeat, Babis' eurosceptic coalition government is unlikely to be destabilized, as it includes right-wing and far-right parties. Since assuming office, his administration has ended direct state military support for Ukraine and challenged EU climate policies. The Senate's role remains limited compared to the lower house, which can override its vetoes, but it still plays a crucial part in approving constitutional changes and confirming presidential nominees to the Constitutional Court.
