On October 16, 2026, a Chinese court sentenced six people to prison terms for serving tainted food at the Heshi Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui, Gansu province, where more than 200 children were found with abnormally high levels of lead in their blood. The operator, Li Huifang, received a life sentence and was fined 500,000 yuan ($75,000). Additionally, the principal, Zhu Jinglin, was sentenced to 15 years and fined 300,000 yuan. The court found that toxic substances, including paint used to enhance food appearance, were added to the children's meals. This case highlights severe regulatory failures in ensuring child safety and food quality in educational institutions.
