Employees at Meta acknowledged in internal communications that the Instagram accounts of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva were negatively affected by restrictions during Brazil’s recent election, according to newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. The report cited messages it reviewed, which also indicated the platform recommended the profile and WhatsApp channel of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, Lula's right-wing challenger. The runoff between Lula and Bolsonaro is set for October 25 after Bolsonaro performed stronger than expected in the first round earlier this month.
Meta has not yet responded to a request for comment on these claims but stated that conversations referenced by Folha related solely to technical issues, not political interference. Lula's camp announced it would file a complaint before the Organization of American States, alleging Meta manipulated social media during Brazil’s election, citing instances where Lula's posts appeared without share buttons and had reduced reach.

Lula, the left-wing incumbent, will face right-wing challenger Bolsonaro in a presidential runoff on October 25, following a stronger-than-expected performance by the senator in the first-round vote earlier this month.
Justice Marco Aurelio Bellizze ruled that Meta cannot reduce the distribution of political content, restrict searches or remove posts in a way that creates an imbalance between Lula and Bolsonaro.
