Meta employees acknowledged in internal communications that the Instagram accounts of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva were negatively affected by restrictions during Brazil's election, according to a report by Folha de S.Paulo. The newspaper cited messages it reviewed, indicating that Meta’s platform also recommended the profile and WhatsApp channel of challenger Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who will face Lula in a runoff on October 25 following his stronger-than-expected performance in the first round of voting earlier this month. Meta did not immediately respond to requests for comment. President Lula’s camp has indicated it would file a complaint with the Organization of American States, alleging that Meta manipulated social media during Brazil's election, citing issues such as posts appearing without share buttons and reduced reach.
