On October 11, 2026, the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari declared an emergency and imposed governor's rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) under Articles 232(1) and 234(1) of the Constitution. This decision came amid rising tensions between the federal government and the PTI-led provincial administration, particularly over counterterrorism policies. The move was approved by the federal cabinet following recommendations that the provincial government had disengaged from efforts to combat terrorism.
In response, shipping containers were placed in strategic locations around Peshawar, including near key landmarks such as the railway station and Edwardes College, to block roads and restrict movement. This followed a week of protests led by KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi demanding the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and medical treatment for him.
Under these emergency provisions, the chief minister and other provincial officials vacated their offices immediately. The federal government appointed Dr Muhammad Fakhr Alam Irfan as the new chief secretary of KP, and the military was deployed at check posts across the province to maintain order. Governor’s rule can be extended for up to six months with parliamentary approval. This action significantly curtails the autonomy of the provincial government and transfers key executive powers to the federal administration in KP.
