The Aporia
New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a statewide disaster emergency on October 3, 2026, due to an outbreak of measles with 108 cases reported so far this year, including 7 in New York City and 101 elsewhere in the state. Since July 15, 92 cases have emerged across 18 under-immunized rural counties. The emergency declaration aims to expand health professionals' abilities to administer measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccines and test for the disease. This marks the first such declaration since measles cases began surging in 2025, with neighboring Pennsylvania experiencing a more severe outbreak of 977 cases, including five deaths.
