New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a statewide disaster emergency on October 3, 2026, due to an outbreak of measles. The state reported 108 cases this year, including 7 in New York City and 101 elsewhere. Since July 15, there have been 92 cases across 18 counties with low vaccination rates. Neighboring Pennsylvania has seen a more severe outbreak with 977 cases and five deaths. The declaration aims to allow more health professionals to administer MMR vaccines and track vaccinations closely. Governor Hochul emphasized that "no one should get seriously ill or die from a vaccine-preventable disease," underscoring the need for increased vaccination efforts in rural areas.
Hochul issued the executive order to allow the state to respond swiftly to the measles outbreak and allow healthcare professionals to vaccinate more New Yorkers against the highly contagious disease.
