New York state reported its first measles-linked child death in over 30 years on November 2, 2026, amid an ongoing outbreak. The death occurred in Lewis County, located about 400 miles northwest of New York City. Governor Kathy Hochul declared a State Disaster Emergency in October due to the measles outbreak across areas of New York and neighboring states. So far this year, 178 cases have been recorded in New York. Health officials emphasized that measles is highly contagious and can cause serious complications and death, stressing that vaccination remains the best protection against the disease. The state department offered resources to Lewis County for community outreach and local vaccination efforts.
