Passengers on the MV Odyssey, a cruise ship offering long-term voyages around the world, were abruptly forced to disembark in Cambodia due to soaring fuel costs resulting from the US-Israel war with Iran. The Florida-based operator, Villa Vie Residences, announced the suspension of operations just two years after the journey began, leaving 203 passengers and 156 crew members stranded at the port of Sihanoukville on October 27th.
Despite being left in Cambodia with little notice, some passengers expressed no regrets. Randy Cassingham, who paid around $1 million for his cabin, said he would rejoin if operations resumed. The cruise ship's capacity is 650, but it was operating below that number when the decision to end the voyage was made.
Villa Vie Residences cited unsustainable financial pressure due to fuel expenses rising from an average of $1,800 per cabin monthly to an estimated $6,000 to $8,000. The company is now working with passengers on temporary living arrangements and evaluating restructuring alternatives over the next 60 days.
The Odyssey had initially set sail in October 2024 from Belfast, Northern Ireland, offering residents the chance to buy or rent cabins for long-term travel without worrying about unpacking and repacking at each port. The abrupt end of this unique concept leaves many travelers stranded with no clear path forward.
The price of fuel across the world has jumped since the start of the US war on Iran earlier this year.
Oil prices climbed to above $117 a barrel this month.
