The Odyssey, a luxury cruise ship offering a three-year residential world voyage, has abruptly ended its journey off the coast of Cambodia due to soaring fuel costs. The vessel had been sailing since two years ago and was scheduled to continue until 2027. Onboard were around 200 passengers who now face the sudden loss of their floating homes.
Villa Vie Residences, based in Florida, announced that they could no longer sustain the rising expenses; monthly fuel costs per cabin have surged from an average of $1,800 to between $6,000 and $8,000 due to the ongoing conflict with Iran. Despite efforts to reduce consumption by slowing down travel plans, the company declared it unable to cover the mounting losses.
Passengers were given just a few hours' notice on October 27th to disembark as fuel supplies ran dry. The ship is now in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, where residents must arrange temporary living accommodations while the company works out financial restructuring options and supports those affected.
