As of October 30, Anthropic, the creator of AI chatbot Claude, filed for a record-breaking initial public offering (IPO) in the US stock market. The filing could potentially raise up to $100 billion and make Anthropic one of the world's most valuable companies. However, Anthropic warns that advanced AI systems could pose existential risks to humanity and may even lead to its complete destruction.
The IPO prospectus highlights Anthropic’s rapid growth and substantial losses, with the company reporting net losses of $81 billion but burning only 7% of raised capital. This mixed messaging has caused uncertainty among investors, some seeing it as a sign that costs are under control while others view it as proof of high future expenses.
Anthropic's founders have pledged to donate most of their stock through charitable foundations, yet the IPO documents suggest otherwise, raising questions about their commitment to this pledge. The company is now expanding its reach globally, including offering shares directly to Australian investors seeking exposure to AI technology despite recent market volatility in that region.
Believers will see a fast-growing company with blue-chip backers, $131 billion of cash, and founders with a seriousness of purpose.
Anthropic has burned less than 7% of the capital it has raised, good enough for respected industry trade SemiAnalysis to declare it “the most efficient scaling of a business in the history of capitalism.”
Anthropic is carrying huge future liabilities — at least $542 billion in payments due for data-center leases and chips, a figure that appears only in footnotes and one it can’t hope to meet without continuous fundraising.
While the believers will see narrowing operating losses as a sign Anthropic is getting costs under control, skeptics see the number just underneath it, $81 billion in net losses, as proof that a lot of Anthropic’s expenses were shifted to investors and lenders whose bill is coming due.
But like all of them, it needs enough investors in the believer camp to bridge it to that promised land.
