An eruption of Indonesia’s Mount Anak Krakatau caused six airports to suspend flight operations on Sunday, affecting hundreds of flights at Jakarta’s main airport, after some school activities and fishing were halted.

A tsunami in 2018 caused by Anak Krakatau eruptions killed more than 400 on Java and Sumatra.
Anak Krakatau, which means child of Krakatau, is a volcanic island that emerged from the caldera formed by the gigantic 1883 explosion that destroyed the original Krakatau and killed more than 36,000 people in a series of tsunamis.
Ash reached as high as 6,000 metres on the Java side of the volcano and 15,000 metres on the Sumatra side, and in some parts of Banten province in Java, the meteorological agency BMKG posted on its website.
The airport closures Sunday and Monday disrupted nearly 2,961 flights, including 622 international services, and affected about 341,000 passengers.

According to local newspaper Kompas, several schools cancelled activities on Saturday after students and residents reported eye irritations from the ash, while some fishermen had cancelled fishing trips at sea similarly reporting sore eyes.
One plume rose to 20,000 feet and drifted northeast over Jakarta, Banten, West Java and nearby waters.
A second cloud reached 50,000 feet and spread over parts of Banten, Lampung and Bengkulu provinces, the southern Sunda Strait and sections of the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra.
