A series of eruptions by Mount Anak Krakatoa, an active volcano located between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, caused widespread disruptions to air travel on Sunday (exact date not specified). The eruptions produced volcanic ash that spread across parts of western Indonesia, including the capital city of Jakarta. This led to the suspension of flight operations at eight airports, including the country's main international airport, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, which serves as a major hub for flights to and from destinations such as Singapore, Doha, and Sydney.
As a result of the eruption, more than 170,000 passengers were stranded, with 1,558 flights cancelled or delayed. The suspension affected international flights as well as domestic routes, including those to and from Bali. The authorities extended the closure several times due to increased eruptive activity, eventually ending it at 5:30 pm on Sunday.
Despite the disruptions, there were no reported casualties or evacuation orders issued, as the nearest settlement is more than 10 miles away from the volcano's crater. However, residents and visitors were warned to stay at least 2 miles clear of the active crater.
