Argentine President Javier Milei says he will sanction oil companies drilling in the Falkland Islands, the British overseas territory claimed by Argentina.
In a national address, Javier Milei said the "winds of change" favoured Argentina's claim to the islands, emboldened by signs the US might reconsider its stance of neutrality on the issue.
Earlier on Thursday, the British outlet GB News asked Trump if he would “come to the UK’s aid” during a potential territorial dispute with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, and hinted that he would not, adding that the UK “weren’t there to help me [with Iran]”.
The Sea Lion oilfield north of the Falkland Islands is operated by majority owner Navitas Petroleum, with Rockhopper Exploration owning 35%.

Responding to the economic threats, the U.K. government reasserted its “unshakeable” commitment to the archipelago on Friday, with British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting insisting: “Milei’s statement overnight tells us more about domestic politics in Argentina than it does about the Falkland Islands.”

For decades, successive US administrations have remained neutral on the competing claims while recognising Britain's de facto administration of the islands.
Trump's latest remarks on the islands come after he previously said the US position on the Falklands is one of many under review.
In 2013, Falkland Islanders voted overwhelmingly to remain British following a referendum.
