Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old gaming engineer for The New York Times, was shot to death Saturday afternoon in the car park of a sports complex in Dublin, east of San Francisco.
What happened
The outlets' own sentences, most widely reported first. Hover one for who reported it.
Court records obtained by The Mercury News reveal McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang, had obtained protection orders against each other, with Jang alleging he hit one of their sons and abused her.
Moments later cops arrested his in-laws Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, who are accused of murder.
McKinsey was later charged in Alameda County Superior Court with two misdemeanor counts of child abuse in connection with the separate incidents.
McKinsey, who was transgender, claimed Chen directed anti-LGBTQ+ slurs at him and the child, referring first to the child and then to McKinsey as a 'disgusting queer' and a 'pervert.'

SAN FRANCISCO – A Bay Area couple have been accused of shooting and killing their son-in-law in a suburban sports park on Sept 26, local police have said.

A police sergeant was driving nearby and saw him on the ground as witnesses began calling 911 and pointing out the couple, who were still near the scene, Dublin Police Services said in a news release.
In that incident, deputies arrived to McKinsey's home to find a two-year-old child left unattended in an upstairs bedroom while McKinsey had left to go shopping.
McKinsey pleaded not guilty in both incidents, and had been released on bail on the condition that he complete 12 parenting classes.
