SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea on Sunday, South Korea’s military said, days after the North threatened to bolster its nuclear deterrent capabilities and respond to what it called U.S. hostilities.

The first missile flew approximately 450 kilometers, while the second, launched about three hours later, traveled more than 600 kilometers, according to South Korean, U.S., and Japanese authorities.
North Korea has legally enshrined its status as a nuclear-armed state, with its leadership declaring the country’s atomic arsenal permanent and irreversible.
The council urged Pyongyang to immediately cease missile activity, warning the test directly violated UN Security Council resolutions.
In August, Trump told reporters that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had "57 very powerful nuclear weapons" as he once again touted the pair's relationship.
