The National Weather Service projected sustained winds of 20 mph to 35 mph (32 kph to 56 kph) on Friday, with peak gusts reaching between 50 mph and 70 mph (80 kph to 112 kph) in certain areas.
The most critical fire weather will be seen through Friday afternoon, when the strongest and longest-lasting winds are expected, said Kevin McGowan, director of the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management.
The Norte fire started in the coastal city of San Clemente and wind drove it into San Juan Capistrano.
To the west of Los Angeles, a separate coastal blaze in Malibu triggered evacuation orders and warnings across a wide section of the Santa Monica Mountains.
