NCAA President Charlie Baker described taking the legal action as an "extraordinary step" intended to prevent DeWine from making it "impossible for all schools to compete on a level playing field."
There was no immediate response from any of the eight Division I programs in Ohio, which includes No. 4 Ohio State of the Big Ten, Cincinnati of the Big 12 and six schools in the Mid-American Conference.
“This whole thing has become comical,” Danny White, the athletic director at Tennessee, said on social media in reaction to the NCAA announcement.
In reaction to the governor's move, the Ohio Supreme Court said it would step in and determine the legality of the executive order.
