WASHINGTON – The pilots of a Miami-based 21 Air cargo plane operating for Amazon.com that crashed in Miami in September, killing five people, were unaware of wind conditions, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said on Oct 1.
A Federal Aviation Administration order governing air traffic control requires controllers to state both wind direction and speed when authorizing use of a runway where a tailwind component exists, the report says.
The plane then collided with a Toyota Corolla Cross sport utility vehicle, and the driver was seriously injured.
Just four minutes before clearing the plane for landing, an air traffic controller had provided a wind advisory to a different flight, noting gusts of up to 25 mph from the south.
