Rideshare giant Uber and one of its drivers have been ordered by an arbitrator to pay $40 million in damages to the parents of a 23-year-old woman, Emily Normandin-Parker, who was struck and killed by traffic after the cab driver kicked her and her friend out of the cab on a California freeway.
What happened
The outlets' own sentences, most widely reported first. Hover one for who reported it.
"While we respect the arbitration process, we believe the arbitrator was wrong in holding Uber legally responsible for the tragic events of that night."
"No family should have to suffer the loss of a child, and our thoughts continue to be with the Normandin-Parker family," Uber said.
The family created the Emily Normandin-Parker Foundation to honor their daughter and advocate for stronger rideshare safety regulations.
Normandin-Parker was fatally struck by another car as their Uber drove away.

Carol Normandin and Ken Parker said on Friday (September 18, 2026) that they hope the amount will put a spotlight on the 2023 death of their daughter, Emily Normandin-Parker, and to use the money to advocate for strengthening safety standards and transparency in the ride-hailing industry.
