James Scanlon, born in Leicester and now 17 years and 346 days old, has made headlines as the UEFA Nations League's youngest goalscorer when he netted against Liechtenstein in September 2024. A versatile winger comfortable on either flank or as an attacking midfielder, Scanlon represents Gibraltar at the senior international level due to his mother’s nationality and has earned 24 caps for the country.
Scanlon began his career at Derby's academy before joining Manchester United's youth setup in February 2021. By early 2023, he was featuring in the UEFA Youth League and later signed his first professional contract with Man United in May 2024. Despite being named on a senior matchday squad for an Europa League tie against Real Sociedad in March 2025, Scanlon did not make a first-team appearance.
This season has seen Scanlon train with Arsenal's first team and play twice for their U21 side ahead of the upcoming game against Ipswich. Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, recently showed faith in him by including him in first-team training sessions.
