Torrential rain from Storm Adam caused severe flooding in eastern Spain on October 20, 2026, leaving at least four people dead and forcing thousands to evacuate their homes. The hardest-hit areas were in the Valencia region near Alicante, with streets submerged and cars washed away. In Oliva, two victims were a 79-year-old woman found in her home and another man who had a fatal heart attack at a campsite. Rescue efforts included airlifting stranded residents from rooftops and rescuing around 2,000 people from campsites. Up to 632 mm of rain fell in Pego within 36 hours, leading authorities to impose emergency restrictions urging residents to stay indoors for safety.
Scientists say climate change is making the autumn storms that hit the Mediterranean coast more intense.
