RAF Typhoon fighter jets are being deployed by the UK to defend Saudi Arabia from escalating aerial attacks by the Houthis, an Iran-backed militant group in Yemen. The deployment, approved by Prime Minister Andy Burnham and announced by Defence Secretary Wes Streeting on October 20, 2026, aims to protect Saudi cities and critical infrastructure like airports and oil facilities from Houthi drones and missiles. RAF jets will operate solely in a defensive capacity without conducting offensive strikes against the Houthis.
Since November 2023, the Houthis have launched numerous attacks on Saudi Arabia, including 18 deaths and hundreds of injuries from missile strikes on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport alone. The UK is also sending military advisers and an Atlas A400M transport aircraft to assist in equipment movement within Saudi Arabia. Additionally, Britain has extended its offer of air-to-air refueling support for Saudi fighter jets for another 90 days.
This intervention marks a significant escalation in the regional conflict involving Western allies supporting Saudi Arabia against Houthi aggression that threatens global energy security and civilian safety.
