Independent MP Helen Haines, 65, is in critical condition after being hit by a car outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria on Monday afternoon. She was unloading belongings from the boot of her car when she was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by Brendan Nugent, 43. Witnesses claim that Nugent had a flick knife and allegedly rammed Haines with his vehicle repeatedly before bystanders subdued him at the scene.
Haines sustained severe lower body injuries and underwent emergency surgery where one of her legs was amputated; she remains in critical but stable condition at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Police arrested Nugent, charging him with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and a federal offense for harming a Commonwealth public official.
Lawyers representing Nugent revealed during his court appearance on Wednesday that he suffers from Idiopathic transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition affecting the spinal cord. The court proceedings are ongoing as police complete a brief of evidence by December 24th, which will be provided to the defense.
