Independent MP Helen Haines was seriously injured on Monday afternoon near her Wangaratta office in regional Victoria when she was hit by a car. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 3:40 PM local time on Murphy Street after reports of a vehicle crash involving Haines, who is known for advocating better telecommunications infrastructure and the establishment of a National Anti-Corruption Commission.
Haines, a former nurse, midwife, and health researcher, was reportedly getting belongings out of her car when she was struck by a white Land Rover. A local barber claimed to have pulled the driver from the vehicle after discovering what appeared to be a flick knife in his pocket. The 65-year-old mother of three is now hospitalized with severe lower body injuries.
Wangaratta, located about two hours and 40 minutes northeast of Melbourne, has a population of approximately 30,000 people. Her family released a statement thanking bystanders and emergency responders for their assistance but requested privacy during this time.
