On March 3, Canadian tourist Mitchell Fairbarn, 34, hopped a fence at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and took a 27-year-old Chilean flamingo named Peachy from its enclosure. Security footage showed Fairbarn carrying the squawking bird through hotel hallways and an elevator.
Fairbarn was convicted of felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges on October 20, after jurors deliberated for about five hours. He faces up to four years in prison plus six months of jail time. Prosecutors argued that Fairbarn caused physical pain to the flamingo, noting missing feathers and blood loss consistent with trauma.
Peachy's veterinarian, Tiffany Moore, said the bird had been doing well physically but was more anxious and nervous during evaluations since the incident. The flamingo required weeks of medication after being injured. Fairbarn's defense attorney argued that the tourist deeply regretted his "bad decisions" while intoxicated but did not intend to harm Peachy.
Fairbarn remains under house arrest pending a sentencing hearing set for December 1, showing no visible emotion as he left the courtroom with his wife.
